The Town of Parachute (pop. 1,390, elev. 5,092 ft., area 2.88 sq mi) sits high on Colorado’s Roan Plateau along the banks of the majestic Colorado River, halfway between Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction. The river was originally named the Grand River, the area, the Grand Valley. The Town was also once named Grand Valley, until the residents changed it back to Parachute, a name taken from a parachute-shaped rock formation north of town.
Parachute has only had four town managers since the mid-1990s, with the average tenure approaching seven years, the shortest being over five years. This career opportunity is available with the announced retirement of Stuart McArthur, who in November will have served Parachute effectively for eight years. The town manager is a well-rounded, working manager, not a figurehead. The 2021 budget is $5.9 million (GF $2.9 million) supporting 23.25 FTE, plus 12 seasonal.
A bachelor’s degree (public or business administration, finance, or related field) plus seven years of progressively responsible experience in public administration, including four years as a department head are required. Prior experience as a town manager, deputy, or assistant, a master’s degree, and the ICMA-CM designation are all preferred. Experience in Colorado is strongly preferred, but not required. Residency within town limits is encouraged and appreciated, but not required.
The hiring range salary is $115,000 to $150,000 DOQE. Comprehensive benefits: medical, dental, and vision insurances; group term life insurance, short- and long-term disability insurances; and an EAP. A flexible reimbursement account is also available. The Town matches 5% to a 401(k) deferred compensation plan for retirement, and a 457(b) plan is available. Paid time off includes vacation and sick leave, plus 12 holidays. Relocation assistance is subject to negotiation.
