Town of Windsor
Town of Windsor, Colorado
Situated in beautiful northern Colorado in the plains at the base of the Rocky Mountains, the
scenic Town of Windsor is a fast-growing community, deeply committed to its small-town feel.
Located midway between two state capitals (Denver, CO, and Cheyenne, WY), Windsor (pop.
40,350, elev. 4,797, 27 sq. mi.) is five times larger than it was 30 years ago and continues to
be one of Colorado’s most desirable communities.
This career opportunity is available with the retirement (year-end 2022) of the town’s longtime
town attorney, who represented the town for many years and was then the first to serve in the
role as a full-time employee, about nine years ago. Appointed by and reporting directly to the
town board, the town attorney is Windsor’s chief legal officer.
The town board seeks a confident, experienced municipal lawyer with high integrity,
unassailable character, and sound legal judgment. Technically competent in all respects, she or
he is experienced in the practice areas customary to local government, with special emphasis
on metropolitan districts, land use, planning, and development. The next town attorney will
assess the legal function within the town and continue to build the legal department, with the
goals of modernization, sophistication, and efficiency.
The position requires demonstrated excellent legal skills and a minimum of seven to ten years
of experience, the majority of which were spent practicing Colorado municipal law in a
municipal law office, or equivalent experience as a contract attorney to municipalities. A juris
doctor from an accredited law school is required. A candidate licensed to practice law in the
State of Colorado, who is active and in good standing with the Colorado Supreme Court, is
strongly preferred, but the town board will also accept applications from candidates able to
obtain admission to the Colorado Bar quickly (on motion) from a reciprocal jurisdiction.
Although not required, residency within Windsor’s municipal boundaries is strongly preferred.
The annual salary range for this position is $186,000 to $205,000 DOQE, plus relocation
assistance. Benefits include: medical, dental, vision, life, long- and short-term disability, and
supplemental insurances, flexible spending accounts for medical and dependent care; and
Employee Assistance Program. Retirement benefits customary to the position through ICMA-RC
are offered, 401(a) mandatory, 457(b) optional. This position enjoys paid vacation and sick
leave, two personal days, and 11 paid holidays. The town pays for attorney registration, CBA
and local bar (one) dues, continuing legal education, and reasonable fees for registration and
travel related to professional development.
