Community: Fort Scott is a vibrant, progressive, and family-friendly community (7,765 pop.), located just over an hour’s drive south of the Kansas City metro, along interstate-grade US-69, ad is home to the Fort Scott National Historic Site, as well as the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Downtown Fort Scott boasts a thriving and charming historic business core, with a welcoming and unique feel.
Fort Scott Community College provides a strong foundation in working with business, industry, and government agencies to further enhance the economic vitality of the region. (The City is also within an easy drive of several acclaimed four-year universities.) Lakes and reservoirs, rivers and creeks, nestled within the rolling hills of eastern Kansas serve to provide a wide range of outdoor/nature activities.
Organization: The City operates under the Commission/City Manager form of government, comprised of five commission members who serve four-year terms. The Mayor is elected by the Commission annually. The City is a full-service city (no electric or gas systems). With 130 full-time employees, and an annual operating budget of $20 Million, the City provides police, fire, public works, parks, water, wastewater collection/ treatment services.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have 2-5 years’ experience as a manager/administrator. Experience as an assistant manager/administrator in a larger city would be considered. Desired professional skills and experience would include: a working knowledge of local government finance and budget, knowledge of infrastructure maintenance, capital improvement planning and funding, economic development tools and strategies; the ability to effectively engage employees and the community, and a demonstrated success in the area of intergovernmental relations.
Salary Range. $115,000-$125,000, via negotiated employment contract, will be offered upon selection, including a full range of benefits.
Education: Minimum Bachelors’ degree; MPA degree preferred.
